About Bridgehampton, NY

Bridgehampton is the location of the second post office for the Town of Southampton (1795) and backdrop for a silent film starring Mary Pickford (1916), and has long been a popular destination for the rich and famous as well as the rich at heart.  Its history, culture and well known shops and watering holes allow visitors to revel in its bustling Main Streets or relax along its ocean shores.  Whether it’s to visit National Historic Landmarks such as the Beebe Windmill at the corner of Ocean Road and Hildreth Avenue, (built in Sag Harbor in 1820 and moved to Bridgehampton in 1837), to attend the world renowned Hampton Classic Horse Show or just fish for blue claw crabs off Bridge Lane bridge,  everyone who comes to this special section of “the Hamptons” agrees it’s really a bridge to a special way of life.

The worldwide usage of the general term “the Hamptons” when speaking of the East End Long Island areas from Westhampton to Montauk may lead many to think of Bridgehampton as the “Hampton” that bridges South and East Hampton.  In reality, this very popular hamlet actually got its name from a bridge.  In 1686, Ezekial Sanford was commissioned by the Town of Southampton to build a bridge over Sagg Pond, in Sagaponack, Long Island, New York.  While this might not be the first conduit that connected Sagaponack with Mecox (the settlement to the west), it was the first bridge officially documented.  The Sanford Bridge, as it was known, stood for almost 100 years and (along with its possible predecessor) is the origin of the name Bridgehampton.

Officially, Bridgehampton is in the Township of Southampton.  This fertile area is made up of farm fields, vineyards and horse farms, community and commerce, all leading easily to its pristine ocean  beachfront properties and quiet ponds both North and South of the highway.
