About Southold

Southold, settled in 1640, is the largest Hamlet in the North Fork and stretches from Peconic Bay to Long Island Sound forming the Center of the North Fork. Soundview Avenue is a stately avenue through the woods and rolling hills and dunes along the Sound. Large Sound front Estates on the Bluffs - as usual on the North Fork - are interspersed with neighborhoods of more modest but equally popular vacation bungalows. The area between Kenny's and McCabe's beaches reminds many of Westhampton Beach - another spot where the Sound Beaches are level - without the usual high bluffs.

On the Bay side, Cedar Beach forms the tip of Southold Hamlet's Main Bayview neighborhood it is known for its small private roads, creeks and Bay Beach front homes. Southold has many creeks - waterfront owners often have their private docks to enjoy Boating and fishing on the Peconic Bay; the marinas there are equally convenient for all other residents. It is good to know that a Town of Southold Beach Sticker allows access to most public Town beaches. Most famous of which is Southold's Founders Landing Park Beach - accessible to Founders Landing Park District residents - with its Wharf House, a charming North Fork landmark where so many memorable weddings took place. All parks are part of the Southold Park District (Including historic sound front "Hortons Lighthouse" commissioned by George Washington).

Other neighborhoods include Calves Neck, Beixedon (jotting out into Southold Bay, and include several creeks), and such traditional summer (second) home neighborhoods as Founders Landing, Harbor Lights and Reydon Shores, some of which with private beaches and marina facilities for residents.

Founders Village is a 55+ community of condominiums in Southold, close to the down town shopping area and conveniences. Newer subdivisions include Angel Shores. The Town of Southold has tried to prevent suburbanization to replace the agricultural nature and open spaces. Newer large subdivisions are rare, preferred development includes preservation of open space, called "conservations subdivision".

Added to Southold's open farm spaces, the town also is proud home to several parks, such as Hashamomuck (or Arshamomuck) Pond and Park.
