About Sag Harbor

Sag Harbor

Sag Harbor, once known as the "un-Hampton", was settled sometime between 1707 and 1730 and was originally a harbor second only to that of New York. It was designated first Port of Entry to the New Country by George Washington.

It's historic mark is most notably as a bustling whaling town, which peaked the 1840s. Today visitors are still enchanted with the village's historic significance, charming and century old architecture, quaint street and shops, and overall charm of yesterday year. A stroll through the streets allows a look at early colonist's Capes, whaling captains' Greek Revivals, and wealthy industrialists' Victorians.

The maritime history continues at the foot of Main St., with the harbor and Long Wharf that is now home to major yachts and sail boats, just as it was home to whaling vessels decades ago.

This rustic yet sophisticated hamlet offers a variety of old town charm with its local stops combined with fine dining restaurants, historical museums, cultural events..
